Gibraltarian requirements

Plan the national formalities before reaching the port.

Clearance when coming alongside

The Gibraltar Port Authority states that all yachts and commercial vessels coming alongside require clearance by the relevant Port Authority, Customs, border and coastguard bodies.

New border arrangements

Arrangements provisionally applied from 15 July 2026 align visitor short-stay conditions with Schengen and provide dual Gibraltar and Schengen checks at the port.

Customs model

Gibraltar has a bespoke customs model and uses ASYCUDA. It must not be treated as Spain or described as ordinary EU customs territory.

Private-marina handling

For yachts without agents berthing at a private marina, the marina operator can handle clearance on behalf of the official bodies.

Mid Harbour bookings

Visiting vessels should arrange Mid Harbour Marina bookings through a nominated Gibraltar agent.

Local confirmation

The July 2026 system is new. Confirm current documents, checks, berth, attendance and charges before arrival.

FAQ

Gibraltar Yacht Clearance questions

Does every yacht need clearance in Gibraltar?

The Port Authority states that all yachts coming alongside require clearance by the relevant official bodies.

Is Gibraltar part of Spain or the EU?

No. Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory and should not be described as Spain or an EU Member State.

What changed on 15 July 2026?

New UK-EU arrangements began provisional application, including aligned visitor short-stay conditions and dual Gibraltar and Schengen checks at the port.

Is a yacht agent mandatory?

A separate agent is not universally mandatory at private marinas because the marina operator can coordinate clearance. Mid Harbour bookings use a nominated Gibraltar agent.

What documents should I prepare?

Prepare passports, crew list, registration, ownership or authority, insurance, skipper qualification, previous clearance and relevant customs evidence.

Is there a universal Yacht Clearance fee?

No universal amount is published here. Confirm current port, authority, marina and agent charges before arrival.

What does Gibraltar Yacht Clearance do?

It reviews the request and may introduce a suitable local agent. It is not the Gibraltar Port Authority, HM Customs, Borders and Coastguard Agency, Immigration, a marina authority or another government body.
